Muharram – Importance, and Significance in Islam
In this post, we have discussed the importance and significance of the Month of Muharram and a few reasons why you should respect it. May Allah (SWT) help us understand our deen and guide us to follow it. Ameen! Muharram is the first month of the Islamic Calendar.
It is also based on 12 months in which 4 are said to be sacred ones and 3 are said to be in succession. Among Islamic Months, we all know the Significance of the Month of Ramadan. The long stretch of Shawal is when Eid-ul-Fitr happens, In Dhul-Hajj the perception of Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha happens. The month of Muharram has its own significance.

Fasting In Muharram:
Fasting in Muharram is to remember the Battle of Karbala. As Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) said:
“The best of fasting after the month of Ramadan is fasting Allah’s given time of Muharram.”
Fasting in this month allows us to remember the long stretch of Muharram. There are a lot of deeds and rewards mentioned in the Quran regarding this month’s fasting.
The Day of Ashoora:
The main day of the month Muharram is the day of Ashoora. It comes on the 10th day of the Month. It is the day when the Battle of Karbala happened and Imam Hussain RA was martyred. It has a very broad history and everything is explained bypassing minutes. Our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is also very concerned about this month. As Ibn Abbas (RA) described:
”I have never seen Prophet (PBUH) more concerned about fasting than on the day of Ashura and in the month of Muharram.”
If you’re a Muslim and want to save yourself from all the sins of the last year, you should Fast and make Dua for your *. If Muslims wish to accomplish reparation, fast during the arrival of Ashoora. In this way, Allah (SWT) will protect you from making sins throughout the year.
Muharram Significance Around the World:
As Muslims, we have to understand the importance of this month on our own. Mostly in many Islamic counties, it is a Public Holiday. On the Government level, the state organizes a safe passage to the rally. Some distribute food and other basic things among others. If you’re a Muslim and want to save yourself from all the sins of the last year, you should Fast and make Dua for your Magfirat. If Muslims wish to accomplish reparation, fast during the arrival of Ashoora. In this way, Allah (SWT) will protect you from making sins throughout the year.

Is it the First Month, we should understand its significance on our own. You should tell the stories of Ashura to your kids so they can understand it as well. Do good deeds and help others in need. Organize a healthy meal and distribute it among the poor. Try to save water as much as you can during the month. May Allah (SWT) help us understand the importance of this month.
